Singapore–Malaysia RTS Cross-Border Bill

From this news, I learned how Singapore and Malaysia are preparing for smoother and more efficient cross-border travel through the upcoming Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link.

One major takeaway is that Singapore has introduced a new law called the Cross-Border Railways (Border Control Co-Location) Bill. This law allows both countries to carry out their customs, immigration, and quarantine (CIQ) checks in the same location, instead of separately at each border. This means travelers can clear immigration for both countries in one place, making the process faster and more convenient.

I also learned that special areas will be set up, such as at Woodlands North Station in Singapore, where Malaysian officers can operate. Interestingly, even though these areas are in Singapore, Malaysian laws will apply within specific zones for border checks. At the same time, Singapore laws will still remain in force, ensuring legal balance and control.

Another important point is that Malaysian officers working in Singapore will have certain powers, such as checking travel documents and screening passengers, along with legal protections while performing their duties. This arrangement is mutual, as Singapore officers will have similar authority when operating in Malaysia at Bukit Chagar Station.

Lastly, both countries are working closely on safety and security. They will share responsibility for handling incidents, including having joint jurisdiction over crimes that happen on trains or tracks between the two countries. This shows strong cooperation and planning to ensure passenger safety.

Overall, I learned that this Bill is an important step toward improving cross-border travel, strengthening cooperation, and making journeys between Singapore and Malaysia more seamless and secure.
